That would mean this is a model 5 made in April, 1927 (see http://typewriterdatabase.com/underwood.4.typewriter-serial-number-database). Since it's grey, it was probably rebuilt in the '40s or '50s with new paint and keytops.Richard Phttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16232053429935587826noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8655653784122131754.post-5194966361841384782018-11-08T08:24:25.787-05:002018-11-08T08:24:25.787-05:00I just purchased an Underwood, that's confusin...I just purchased an Underwood, that's confusing me. It has serial: 2255|04-5, but looks more like a grey Underwood model 5. It has 2 Shift keys, a backspace on the left and a tab on the right. No writing on the front of the typewriter (below spacebar). It does not feature the left ribbon wheel handle. Could I have an updated model (older model with updated keys for instance). No stickers or other markings.Arne Kuilmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14078163898505444234noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8655653784122131754.post-12966658389575381042013-04-18T02:15:06.684-04:002013-04-18T02:15:06.684-04:00I love the vast number of changes over the years o...I love the vast number of changes over the years of the Underwood Nos. 1-5 and am still compiling and looking for some of the many changes. The ribbon selector rocker key was added for 1910 and the two ribbon winding crank wheels (one on each side of the typewriter) still existed through 1907 but were gone by 1908 I believe. Years ago I acquired a 1909 No.5 and recently added a 1902 No.4, 1909 No.3 and a 1927 No.3. With so many variations of these rugged workhorses I'm sure that I will add another one or two to the pile. I enjoyed getting to know the mechanics of it, and it's now become one of my go-to machines. I've also got a 1934 No. 6 with a 26-inch platen. The action's a bit strident, but it never fails to make me laugh when I use it. As this model was so wide spread in offices, a good part of global correspondence of the time is Underwood 5. You find it often in business letters. And I realized I don't have this very typeface in my collection.shordzihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04824301365798484902noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8655653784122131754.post-45076795205605334312013-02-01T21:28:42.017-05:002013-02-01T21:28:42.017-05:00I've found the space for one Underwood 5 - eve...I've found the space for one Underwood 5 - every collector should have one, and they're amazingly plentiful and cheap to acquire. You have some very fine examples. One day I hope to add a number 5 to my collection even if I do not have the space for one.
