Typewriter lovers young and old, newbies and experts, gathered at Herman Price's Chestnut Ridge Typewriter Museum today. (Herman is gesturing in this photo.)
We spent hours playing show and tell, comparing machines, absorbing delightful trivia.
I loved this 1938 Adler Standard that Will and Dave Davis brought. I don't know that I've encountered a typewriter that feels better, does nicer work, and has better features. (Read Will's post about it here.)
But my favorite typewriter was this one!
Herman had this cake made for me to thank me for editing ETCetera for seven years. It was an unexpected and delightful surprise. It may be the closest I come to having a Sphinx typewriter, which has been on my 10 Most Wanted list for some 16 years.

Thanks for sharing. Looks like it was seriously educational, I mean, look at the dead serious face of that Ken Coghlan guy. (:
ReplyDeleteThe Sphinx cake is very cool!
Gorgeous machines and good company; very nice. Congratulations on your hard earned SPHINX.
ReplyDeleteThe Adler looks wonderful. I imagine it would have the characteristic German 'snap".
Looks like a great time was had by all! Thanks for the pics - great looking machines. Hopefully that cake tasted as good as it looks!
ReplyDeleteI've only just gotten home, after the *exciting* five hour drive. I have...so much to post! I will definitely have it all up by tomorrow. Tonight, I DINE!...On all of the amazing machines that were not in my house a mere 24 hours ago.
ReplyDeleteI will comment more on this later, Richard, but thank you for everything! The most fun I have had in a while! Actual conversations about typewriters? Forget about it! Fantastic!
Also, Travis looks quite surprised in that first picture, doesn't he? All I can think of is the sound Scooby Doo makes when he is surprised.
ReplyDeleteUrrrnngg?
That Sphinx sure looks tasty! Great job on the decals, too.
ReplyDeleteLove the new background image!
Ohhhhhhhhhhh That Adler is sweet!
ReplyDeleteMind you, the Sphinx looks sweeter!
So, how did that Sholes of yours get received?
We had an absolute blast; you'll be reading more about that on the blog. It's been way too long since I've seen Herman, Richard, Marty, Peter, Maddie, Travis, Gabe, Jett and Jack face to face. It was also great to meet some new people and a couple of new collectors, too.
ReplyDeleteOne day I want to get to one of these, if I can get invited far enough in advance to get the time off. That cake is marvelous!
ReplyDeleteThat Sphinx really takes the cake! (ducking)
ReplyDeleteI always feel envious when I see pictures & descriptions of these typewriter meetings. What fun it must have been.
Perhaps it's just as well that I wasn't there, though, as I probably would have blown a gasket with my over-abundance of enthusiasm.
If I had money for gas I would have been there :( It would have been 4.5 hours each way! Maybe next time.
ReplyDeleteVery nice Sphynx! And I spy a certain recently revived Sholes conversing amicably with the "youngsters" that sat with it on that table. ;-)
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great place and fun time. I'd like to attend one of these. Maybe some day.
ReplyDeleteThat was a dangerous bunch there. Good times!!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the great gathering and your publishing accomplishments. I wish someone had taken a video of all the machines in that room. I'm drooling at the thought.
ReplyDeleteVery cool cake! Was it chocolate?
ReplyDelete(Now I want to try out one of those Adlers!)
That looks like it was an absolute blast. What a wonderful assortment of machines, too! Congrats on finally getting your 'Sphynx'!
ReplyDeleteOh, super! Thanks for sharing. Good to see my fellow enthousiasts on the other side of the big pond. The Sphinx is a very nice surprise, but don't worry Richard, it is only a Vorspeise, as the real one will show up sooner or later :)
ReplyDeleteWe also had a collectors meeting last weekend, post follows.
Simply: wow!
ReplyDeleteGreat fun im sure. I think that it is so freakin cool to meet and bond over typewriters and be friends for years and years.
I hope this truth remains for a very long time
