This reminds me of another Kurt Vonnegut quote from his book of letters. He would tell aspiring writers to say only what they needed to say. "Don't throw open the window and try to make love to the world. You'll catch a cold."
And what better medium for saying the essential than a typewriter? because hacking away at the keys certainly doesn't leave time (or energy) for much mediocrity!
