Well, in sussing this one out I can't forget that you're from Oakland. And, besides Sal Bando, we all know one thing about Oakland--that there is no there there.
Is it a coincidence that I ended up studying a philosopher whose main concept is "being-there"? But seriously, Gertrude Stein's line is always taken out of context—she was referring to where her old house in Oakland used to be, not to the city itself, which has character galore.
I like this one a lot.
