Sholes Visible: how fast will it go?

Here's the machine with its guide plate back in place. As you'll see, the typebars line up in two neat rows. This video illustrates the motion of the typebars and performs a speed test.

(Sorry about the static near the beginning, I must have been brushing my finger against the mike. I make these videos with my iPad, which is very convenient because it can upload the video to YouTube quickly and easily.)

  1. This thing just keeps getting cooler and cooler with each post you make about it. Thanks for answering the questions about the bottom-most typebars. Truly an amazing piece of ingenuity. It really seems like it will keep up to your fast pace of typing, something that cannot definitively be said of most other off-beat designs. Awesome.

  2. You seem to get more speed out of that than I expected. But I'll wait and see how it goes in general use - actually typing something. Quite an amazing system though! Nice.... Nice...

  3. You're doing a phenomenal job on the Sholes. I have the "Before" pics and this is definitely significant overhaul. Can't wait to how it actually types on paper and what the typeface might look like.

  4. Thanks for the demo! That thing is wicked-awesome. I was expecting major jamming but it looks like it's pretty smooth even with that crazy type-mechanism. Sounds pretty good too. Very excited about seeing the completed machine in action. You make it look easy restoring these things, well done. We know it isn't.

  5. Wow--all back together without a little pile of leftover screws, washers, and springs? Color me impressed!

  6. Not so fast ... I've still got to reattach the carriage and escapement ...

  9. This machine is certainly not a knock-off of someone else's design for sure. Very interesting.
