What's in the basement?



Inspector Louis Kehlweiler doesn't know what's in the basement. If you want to know, just be the first to send me your address ... but you'll have to find out in French or Spanish. A friend of my father gave me this fine mystery novel in both languages; it hasn't been translated into English yet. I translated this scene from the Spanish.

    I'm not quite clear how this is supposed to work. Are you saying that the first person to send you their address will be told what's in the basement, and the rest of us will have to suffer in suspense? Is that what you're saying? .... That's a cruel form of torture ... Will we ever be let in on the secret?

      The first two people to request the books (in French and Spanish) will be able to read them and find the answer. The rest of you can speculate but I won't let the cat out of the bag.

    My first guess was that it has to be typewriters, but it reads like a criminal minds-show! Or even worse, dolls! But I'm not buying either of the books, so I will probably never know...

    Now you've got me curious about this writer, Fred Vargas (who it turns out is a female French archaeologist). Pity her books are not available on Kindle. Good translation, Richard.
