  1. A post on paper, on paper. Nice.

  2. Paper: Yes Richard, for I shall persist. And I don't mind my digital brothers. The aim is the same.

  3. Yes, we can all find ways to take paper back, or have it take us. My typed-mail email is one example. Type your email, then scan it, then send it as the body of your post! It drives most of my friends nuts.

    1. That's how I sent an rsvp to a wedding last year. Some things just seem right.

  5. Superb!

I still like to write and type on paper more than using a PC.

  6. Nice, Richard. I'm sure your sentiments don't just look good on paper. (:

  7. Beautiful, and a reminder, of what we take for granted! As an artist,I too long for and prefer the tangible, real, tactile, "hands on feel" of paint on paper. And of course ink, and type on paper. Thanks!

  9. Beautiful words to your first love. When I was very young my father worked for IBM and would bring me home whatever scrap paper he could find - I had a hunger to create. Sad the way the digital medium has replaced that over the years. It is comforting to see my kids constantly emptying the paper tray on the Brother printer and even better to see them dragging out their Remingtons and Royals to write to my parents. The hunger continues...

  10. Few environments can transport me to what seems like an alternate dimension in which time ceases to exist and distractions blend with the objects of my attention like an old-style stationery store. Modern office supply chain stores have completely lost the charm and effect of their ancestors. It's what happens when the life is drained from things, and all that's left is cost and product. These old typewriters help me to remember what was lost, but your essay did a pointedly good job of putting what many of us feel into words. Thank you for writing this.

By the way, I posted a public link to this entry on Facebook. I have friends there who may also appreciate reading this. It may be interesting to see what they have to say as well.

  11. thanks for reminding me of the wonder of the good stationery store... I think you're touching the tip of the iceberg here: nice paper is part of the aesthetic experience of printing/writing and reading the book...
