Typewriter repair = chess?

"Mateo" usually beats me.

  2. That's an interesting reflection.
I equate repair with a certain semblance of empathy -- a desire to 5ake the time to observe and understand what is the problem. The machine has no feelings and no malice, so it serves no purpose for the repair person to lose its temper over the difficulties of resolving a problem. Patience is essential. Figuring out the problem from a few different angles is often needed, in order to see the problem with precision and find the solution.

  3. As a chess playing Typist, I agree with Richard's observations. I would go one step further and say that the same patience and forethought that benefit the chess player and the typewriter repairman, also benefit the typewriter user. It's when I let my thoughts outrun my fingers that I find I make the most mistakes in my composition. Also, one should not discount study and research. Thanks Richard.
